Road closures in KL from midnight

KUALA LUMPUR: Several major roads in the national capital will either be closed or diverted from Friday midnight, police said.

Police said in their Facebook page that the roads involved are: the whole stretch of Jalan Syed Putra, Jalan Istana, Jalan Bukit Petaling, Jalan Bellamy and several roads around Istana Negara.

Other roads involved are Jalan Sultan Hishammuddin, Jalan Lembah Perdana, Jalan Chenderasari and roads around Masjid Negara and Dataran Merdeka, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek, Dataran DBKL, Kompleks Sogo, Maju Junction, Masjid Kampung Baru, Jalan Kinabalu, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Sri Amar, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Haji Taib, Jalan Raja Muda Musa, Jalan Raja Bot, Jalan Raja Abdullah, Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Jalan Gereja, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Loke, Jalan Sultan Mahmud and all nearby roads.

Police urged the people to cooperate and abide by traffic regulations and follow instructions issued by traffic police from time to time.

Police also advised the public to avoid going into the city centre to prevent traffic congestion.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar explained Friday the police had to put in place tight security measures over the illegal rally planned for Saturday to maintain public order and ensure the people's safety.

"Road blocks have to be set up at certain places to prevent troublemakers from entering the city," he told a news conference here.

"We have information that the troublemakers plan to stage demonstrations and marches at several locations in this city," he said.

Ismail said some groups planned to use certain mosques in the city to gather en masse.

"They have entered KL individually or in small groups to avoid detection and detention by the police," he said.

Ismail also said that the order prohibiting 91 suspected key leaders of groups intending to stage rallies from being in Kuala Lumpur Saturday also covered their supporters.

Despite the prohibition order, the organisers of the illegal rally remained defiant, he said. - Bernama
