Soccer: Liverpool win Carling Cup on penalties

Reds win Carling Cup on penalties

Scoring Summary

Cardiff City Liverpool
Joe Mason (19')Martin Skrtel (60')
Ben Turner (118')Dirk Kuyt (108')

Liverpool overcame conceding a 118th-minute equaliser to win the Carling Cup on penalties against Cardiff City on Sunday.

Steven Gerrard saw the Reds' first penalty of the shoutout saved by Tom Heaton, but cousin Anthony missed Cardiff's decisive final spot-kick to hand the Merseyside club their first significant piece of silverware since 2006.

Gerrard, on as a substitute, was consoled by his relative at the final whistle - as Kenny Dalglish and his side were finally able to celebrate their success after a rollercoaster afternoon that had numerous twists and turns.

Young striker Joe Mason had opened the scoring in the first half for Cardiff in normal time, as Liverpool needed until the 60th minute for Martin Skrtel to find an equaliser and set the stage for an extra 30 minutes of action.

Dirk Kuyt then put Liverpool on course for celebration with an unorthodox finish, before the Dutchman's joy turned to pain as he failed to clear from a corner as centre-back Ben Turner poked home a second equaliser.

That sent the game to penalties - which started in horrible fashion for the Premier League side as both Gerrard and Charlie Adam missed their opening attempts. But Kenny Miller and Rudy Gestede missed for the Welsh side and, after Stewart Downing, Dirk Kuyt and Glen Johnson had converted, a second miss from a Gerrard decided the contest.

Things looked like they would go to plan for Dalglish's side when the Cardiff crossbar was rattled inside two minutes.

Steven Gerrard raced 60 yards on a quick counter-attack but Johnson's shot which beat goalkeeper Tom Heaton and came back off the crossbar, with Gerrard blazing over the rebound, was the closest they came to threatening Cardiff's goal in the first half.

The Bluebirds created two better chances and, crucially, converted one.

Having snatched at a shot from Don Cowie's clever movement and backheel Kenny Miller did not make the same mistake twice.

The former Rangers front man was afforded all the time and space he required in the 19th minute when he picked up the ball just outside the area.

When Daniel Agger eventually closed him down Miller slid a pass into the space behind the centre-back where Mason collected and fired beyond Jose Reina.

The rest of the half saw Liverpool dominate but rarely trouble Cardiff.

Stewart Downing was their most creative outlet with a succession of crosses from the left but the Bluebirds dealt with them well enough, relying on Liverpool's over-complication and profligacy.

Charlie Adam flashed a low drive narrowly wide of Heaton's left-hand post while late in the half Andy Carroll was denied a clear close-range shooting opportunity when Cardiff captain Mark Hudson's outstretched leg hooked the ball away.

Liverpool fans tried to evoke memories of their second-half comeback in Istanbul in the 2005 Champions League final with a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone at the break.

The situation was not quite as dire as that night but certainly Dalglish's side needed to find more composure and their clinical side.

Luis Suarez was starting to have more of an influence and drew the first real save from Heaton with an angled shot and was denied by Kevin McNaughton's perfectly-timed intervention just as he was about to unload from close range.

The appearance of former Cardiff striker and boyhood fan Craig Bellamy for the ineffectual Jordan Henderson brought, probably for the first time in cup final history, a standing ovation from both sets of fans.

Liverpool's salvation, however, was to come from an unexpected source.

Downing's 60th-minute corner was nodded on by Carroll to Suarez whose header came back off the post and Skrtel showed the composure in front of goal unbefitting a centre-back by taking a touch and slamming home the equaliser.

Turner had a chance to be Cardiff's hero with six minutes to go but planted his far-post header into the side-netting.

Miller should have won it for the Bluebirds in normal time when a quickly-taken free-kick caught the defence napping but the Scot, in acres of space in the penalty area, shot over with the goal at his mercy.

Barely a minute into extra time Andrew Taylor cleared Suarez's header from a Bellamy corner off the line before Anthony Gerrard finally got the chance to square-up against his more illustrious cousin when Hudson was forced off with cramp.

Three minutes into the second period of extra time Liverpool took the lead when Kuyt drilled home the rebound from his own cross.

The Dutchman then headed a shot off the line but got himself in a tangle at the resulting corner to allow Turner to force penalties.

In the shoot-out which followed Steven Gerrard and Adam missed for Liverpool, Miller, Rudy Gestede and Anthony Gerrard for Cardiff. Source: ESPN Soccernet

Annoucement: Say NO to LYNAS!

GIVEN the public opposition against Lynas Corporation‘s proposed rare earth processing plant in Pahang, it is timely to revisit the due process that is supposed to govern the inception of such projects. How did the public come to know about the project so late after federal approval had already been given for it? Can public input at this stage change the outcome, or has the decision already been made?

Malaysia had actually made a commitment to prevent such a lack of transparency. In 1992, at the Rio Earth Summit, the nations of the world agreed upon a plan to slow, and hopefully halt, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, and climate change. Malaysia was there, and signed the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

One of the principles of the CBD, Principle 10, was on the right to access environmental information. This principle has three pillars: public participation in decision making, the right to access environmental information, and the right to environmental justice. Unfortunately, Malaysia’s implementation of this principle – as with many other parts of the convention – has been halfhearted at best.

(Source: Petition to Stop Lynas Facebook page @ www.facebook.com/save.kuantan)

Short-term gains

There is no price tag to clean air, to clean water, or to an atmosphere free of contamination by radiated materials. On the other hand, there is a lot of money to be made in contaminating the air or water. This has been used as justification by regulatory agencies such as the Department of Environment (DoE) for turning a blind eye to factories breaking the law. No less than a former director-general once said that although the DoE was aware of factories illegally polluting rivers, it could not take action due to the “economic contribution” of these factories.

This betrays a significant problem. Whether due to corruption or short-sightedness, we are mortgaging our communal health and well-being for short-term corporate, individual profit – even when it breaks the law. This benefits the rich, the well-connected and the powerful at the expense of the average Malaysian – specifically what Principle 10 of the convention aims to address.

EIAs: Truly independent?

In Malaysian law, one way we have attempted to put this principle into practice is through the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The point of conducting an EIA is to give the environment some weight in development decisions, and to ensure that any development is beneficial overall, not just in terms of the monetary costs. To actually achieve this, the process should be independent, transparent, and it needs to have some clout. Projects that have an overwhelmingly adverse environmental impact should be shelved.

Our EIA process fails in all aspects.

An EIA is conducted for a proposed project. Take, for example, the need for additional sources of clean water for Kuala Lumpur. The responsible government agency (the Public Works Department, for example) could initiate an EIA to discover the best way of meeting the perceived need. At the same time, it could assess the urgency of meeting that need, and plan how to meet any growth in water demand over a longer time frame in the most economically, socially and environmentally beneficial ways. This would allow for the impartial weighing of options, rather than being biased towards a particular project from the outset.

There is also a lack of independence because the consultant conducting the EIA is chosen and paid by the project proponent. If the consultant finds that a project is an environmental nightmare, and recommends that it should not continue, their wage controllers are going to be unhappy.

And there is a lack of clout: while consultants have to be registered with the DoE, there is little that the DoE can do to ensure that project proponents do not put undue pressure on the consultants to make the report favourable to the project, rather than ensure an impartial assessment of environmental (and social) costs and benefits.

(Source: Stop Lynas Facebook page @ www.facebook.com/stoplynas)

(Source: Stop Lynas Facebook page @ www.facebook.com/stoplynas)

These problems can be fixed by a review of how consultants are appointed. Rather than having the proponent directly appoint a consultant, appointments could be made by the DoE, to whom the consultants should be answerable. The proponent would still pay for the report, but through the department. This could help protect the consultant from pressure to downplay any environmental costs of the proposed project.

This would also provide the DoE with greater powers of oversight in the completion of the report. A number of types of projects, such as dams and power plants, have detailed guidelines on how the EIA should be conducted. Such details include the types of questions that should be asked and the types of mitigation that are considered acceptable.

These guidelines are reasonably stringent and potentially have the force of law. If the DoE was directly overseeing the completion of a report, it could insist on the higher standards that already exist in the guidelines.

What public participation?

Another concern is the transparency of the review process. While any detailed EIA has to be open for public comment, and most EIAs are now available electronically, there is no guarantee that public comments will be acted upon or taken into consideration.

Public feedback is only considered if it specifically addresses the EIA report, not if it merely raises general concerns about a project. Feedback is only invited in the final stages of the report, when the proponent company has already invested in the project. And there is no mechanism for holding the review panel accountable for accepting or rejecting an EIA report, or even for discovering the recommendations that the panel makes.

To ensure that we, the Malaysian public and taxpayers, are not bearing the brunt of private profits, and to meet our international obligations to the environment and future generations, we need to review the weight we give to environmental considerations and how we define development.

More money is worthless if our land, seas and rivers are poisoned, and if our population suffers from radiation and chemical poisoning. One step towards doing this would be to revisit Principle 10 of the CBD, and ensure that we are doing all we can to allow access to environmental information and environmental justice.

________________________________________________________

My Comments: alexleow-kimmy.com are truly sad and condemns the government for being ignorant and putting Malaysians life in risk as they allowed LYNAS plant to be setup here in Malaysia. We do not want this to happen where there's risk of radiation and it's hazardous to our health. There's a peaceful demonstration and I would strongly encourage you guys to join in to show the support to condemn LYNAS from building a plant over here. If this plant had been successful started its operations, I believe it would be very dangerous and if one day a silly mistake would have costs dearly to the residents especially in Kuantan and it might spread to other states as well. Say no to LYNAS and BAN LYNAS!

Food Hunt: Claypot Station Restaurant (煲煲香), Kota Damansara (UPDATE 2)

Dear All,

Welcome back to yet another edition of Food Hunt where ME & Kimmy had visited Claypot Station Restaurant (煲煲香), Kota Damansara to try out the food over here. This is my second visit to this place. The last time I came here is together with my brother Alan Leow. For the previous comments of the food on this restaurant, please visit http://www.alexleow-kimmy.com/2011/11/food-hunt-claypot-station-restaurant.html. We reached here at about 8.00pm and the restaurant is almost filled with people and their business are pretty good as well.

We sat down and knowing that the restaurant is almost full with people but the service is still good with faster service as well. The food arrived pretty fast as well. We ordered the Fa Tiu Chicken (华彫鸡)-RM12.90 (Small) together with Sour & Spicy Vegetables (RM6.00) and 2 Glass Of Herbal Drinks (RM2.50 each). It comes together with 2 bowls of rice as well. The Fa Tiu Chicken (华彫鸡)was amazing and it was very tasty. Both of us love the gravy of the Fa Tiu Chicken as it was so delicious. We wanted to order more but knowing that we could not finish it if we order too much.I vowed to come back again to try the Fa Tiu Chicken in future again. The Spicy & Sour Vegetables portion for small is really small and for the price of RM6.00, I would think it's still reasonable too. The taste meanwhile is good and recommended to all of you too.The Herbal Drinks are nice too and it's strong in herbal taste and we love it very much. Although it's a simple meal, but we do enjoy ourselves thanks to the delicious meal.

The bill came and we have to pay for about RM25.00 for 2 pax and we thinks that price is pretty reasonable too as we had a good and nice meal followed by nice chicken meat and the gravy too. I am looking forward to try this dish and other dishes as recommended by other bloggers during our next visit to Claypot Station again. Enjoy your meal and chaozzz! Food Hunt: Tang House Of Fishball, Sea Park, Petaling Jaya

Dear All,

Welcome back to yet another edition of Food Hunt where ME & Alan had an unexpected planning where I went to see doctor because I am not feeling well and thus after seeing the doctor, ME & Alan had lunch nearby and we have selected the Tang House Of Fishball located at Sea Park in Petaling Jaya. It's already 2.30pm in the afternoon and of course it's after lunch break and so the restaurant is not packed with people and there's a lot of place to sit. The place is super clean and full of marble tables and chairs. They serve all things to do with fish paste: fishballs, fishcake, fish noodles and Yong Tau Foo stuffed with fish paste. There is a big sign proclaiming their freshness and their fish paste has no preservatives. It's great that they are doing this as more and more people are getting health conscious.

We look at the menu and the choices of fishball noodles are pretty less but there's other food to eat as well besides Fishball. After looking at the menu for about 5 minutes, ME & Alan had decided what to eat. Both of us ordered the Homemade Noodles (RM6.00) while for drinks I've ordered the sour plum ice drink (RM2.50) while Alan ordered Soya Bean Ice (RM2.50). We do not waited very long for the food to arrive and we manage to try out the Handmade Noodles. The taste was good and the ingredients given are pretty fresh as well including the slices of fishcake and a fishball. The fishball was very fresh and tasty. The mee meanwhile is nice and juicy too. Pretty decent dish. Alan gave the same comments as well. For the Sour Plum Ice drink, it was just normal with nothing much special while Alan claimed that the Soya Bean was very nice and well prepared as it was not too sweet too. Thumbs up for the soya bean ice drink.

The price meanwhile is pretty expensive considering the portion of the mee. As you can see the bowl is very small and the portion is very less and both of us remembered that both of us only take about a 4-5 tablespoon of the mee and it's finished. For the price of RM17.00 for the bill, I rather eat outside that I find out it's much more better or have the similar quality as this restaurant but I can get at a cheaper price perhaps. It's worth of try but not always I guess. The quality of the food is there but the portion is not suitable for both of us and it's more suitable for girls. You can order a larger portion but with additional price. I would still recommend you to come over here to try out the fishball mee over here as they claimed that their food has no preservatives. Eat healthy right? Enjoy! MY RATING: 4/5 ; ALAN RATING: 4/5

Food Hunt: La Teh Restaurant, Sri Sinar, Segambut (UPDATE 2)

Dear All,

Welcome back to yet another edition of Food Hunt where ME & Kimmy had once again arrived at La Teh Restaurant located at Sri Sinar, Segambut and we had a great time dining in but I am a little bit dissapointed as I am having a bad toothache but still I am trying my best to enjoy the food with the pain. We reached the restaurant at about 8.00pm and there crowd is quite a lot too but still there's place for you to sit. We managed to find a place to sit and again we browse through the menu for about 10 minutes before deciding what to eat.

Finally I've ordered Thai Pad Thai (RM11.95) which I missed out during my first visit previously. Kimmy ordered Nasi Ketuk Seafood with Sambal Petai (RM16.95). For drinks I've ordered Lychee Watermelon (RM8.95) while Kimmy ordered Cucumber Sour Plum (RM8.95). Besides, we've also ordered a side dish that would be Lemongrass Drumstick (RM8.95). The food does not take very long to arrive and we are satisfied with their service as well.

The Thai Pad Thai is a must try. Many people had commented before that this dish is a must try when you are here and finally I manage to try it out. Although I am having a tough time enjoying my meal due to mouth ulcer pain, still I can taste the Thai Pad Thai is nice and delicious. The taste is just nice and it contains of 3 elements spicy, sweet and sour as well. Great dish to try out when you are here next time. About the Nasi Ketuk Seafood with Sambal Petai, it was a bit dissapointing rather. The rice is nice but the Seafood and Sambal Petai is very sour and it should not be sour instead. It's nice when it served spicy and sour. If compared to Nasi Ketuk Ayam Tandoori, Nasi Ketuk Ayam Tandoori is nice and way better than the Seafood with Sambal Petai. Still it's average and since I like to eat petai, no problem for me.

Lychee Watermelon (RM8.95)

Cucumber with Sour Plum (RM8.95)

The best comes from the Lemongrass Drumstick where the taste is nice. It's a kind of satay but the meat is then stick together with the 'serai'. This is really nice and the fragrance is really perfect as well. Love the taste of this dish. Recommended to order. Finally the drinks that we've ordered. The Watermelon Lychee was somehow nice as it was not too sweet and the lychee given was huge and sweet too. You can just imagine by looking at the picture. For the Cucumber Sour Plum, it was also nice indeed. The cucumber taste was just nice and not too sweet too and it also maintain the sour plum taste as well. Recommended to order both of these drinks.

Lemongrass Drumstick (RM8.95)

Nasi Ketuk Seafood & Sambai Petai (RM16.95)

Thai Pad Thai (RM11.95)

The price as I mentioned on my first post earlier if you read it where the prices is slightly expensive but as long you have a satisfying meal, you will still pay the amount of money. For 2 main course, 1 side dishes and 2 cup of drinks, it costs me about RM62.00 plus 10% Service Charge and I guess it would be just nice. Have you tried out the Nanyang cuisine over here? This is already my second post and I hope one day you can go and try it out as well. For the first posting please read it here: http://www.alexleow-kimmy.com/2011/11/food-hunt-la-teh-restaurant-sri-sinar.html. Enjoy your meal. MY RATING: 5/5 ; KIMMY RATING: 4/5

Can Zoolander and his new friends find out how to prevent the incident before it's too late?

_______________________________________________________

My Comments: Today I am very free and thinking of what to do, I've decided to watch a movie borrowed from my friends. It's a DVD movie and when I read the title of this movie, I taught that this movie has to do with Zoo and I realized that it wasn't. It was talking about a clueless male model who had been trained and being betrayed to kill the Prime Minister Of Malaysia. This movie had been apparently banned in Malaysia as it involves the assassination of the Prime Minister Of Malaysia and futhermore the Prime Minister is a Chinese which named Hassan. The Director of this movie, who is Ben Stiller himself has a great anticipation on this movie and his role in this movie really good as well. There's a lot of laughter in this movie and it would be one of the great movie to watch as well. The plot was great and the storyline was simple and easy to understand. It was a great movie to watch and I would recommend you to go and find this DVD. Enjoy! MY RATING: 5/5

Politics: Dr Chua Soi Lek vs YB Lim Guan Eng debate

KUALA LUMPUR: If the opposition is strengthened, it essentially means that PAS is strengthened, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek in his debate with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng on Saturday.

“PAS will lead them and will definitely push for Islamic laws. Religion is a sensitive issue in a multi-racial country, especially when religion is made the core of a democracy.

"Be it in economy or education, it will raise negative issues,” said Dr Chua, in the debate entitled 'Chinese at a Crossroads - Is a Two-Party System Becoming a Two-Race System?' here Saturday.

He said the opposition always lied. “Their main objective is to wrest power, and the opposition now is very diferent from the past.

Dr Chua making a point during the debate

"When PAS becomes dominant, the opposition will say don't worry, it will all be good. This is the biggest political lie.

“Look at Kedah - men and women need to sit separately. No alcohol in Kelantan, no cinema in Bangi. This clearly shows DAP is a slave to PAS,” Dr Chua said.

“In DAP's history of 48 years it has only contested in Chinese majority areas, adopting the policy of using Chinese against the Chinese.

“The DAP wants to teach Umno a lesson but they dare not face Umno. In fact, they only challenge the Chinese based political party,” he said.

He said the DAP had incited hatred and split the people so that it could take over the government.

He said the Penang Chief Minister was giving false hope to the people that the Chinese could also be the heads of other states.

Lim Guan Eng gesturing during the debate.

He also said that the DAP was helping the PAS to be the “tai ko” to take over the states or federal government.

After the 2008 election, Dr Chua said the DAP had the highest number of state seats but the Mentris Besar were from PAS.

Dr Chua also chided Guan Eng for saying that he wanted zero opposition in Penang in the coming election.

“How can the country establish a two-party system when there is no opposition?” he asked.

“To me, the two party system is only a slogan DAP is using to grab power.”

He also condemned the opposition candidates who lost in the election of being missing from their respective constituencies as even their service office had disappeared after they lost.

As for Guan Eng, he told the packed ballroom that Barisan has been making contradictory statements, with MCA claiming that PAS has been making use of DAP.

“However, Umno says that it is DAP that is using PAS. We are not using each other, we are ready to be used by the people.

“We are not against the Malays, Chinese or Indians but corrupt government,” he added.

Guan Eng also said it was Barisan that was a two-race coalition.

“Barisan's concept has divided the country into Malays and non-Malays since Independence in 1957.

“If the opposition comes into power, we will take care of all Malaysians, regardless of race, as we are one family,” he added.

Guan Eng urged the people to be brave enough to stand up and realise the two party-system.

He explained that with a two-party system, the party that could not perform could step down and the other party could take over.

He also promised to abolish the Penang bridge toll, to increase the oil royalties to Sabah and Sarawak, and give RM1,000 to senior citizens annually. “We want to set up a policy state and not a police state,” he said.

Guan Eng also gave, as examples, his achievements in Penang including dual languages in road signages and zero corruption after 2008.

Guan Eng refuted allegations that the Penang state government did not allocate land to Chinese primary schools, saying that it had given money to all schools, including Chinese independent schools.

“We should not bow to fate and have the right to equality. We should not kneel and beg. We should be brave enough to stand and ask for it,” he said.

He said that he had told his daughter that he wanted to be their voice so that they could continue to stay in this country and need not to leave the country for a better life.

He said the unfairness faced by the Chinese was also faced by the non-Chinese.

“We should stand together to ensure our children's future,” he said. Source: The Star Malaysia 18/02/2012

Dear All,

Happy Valentines Day once again to all of you. Hope you have a great Valentines yo! Anyway, this year Valentines seems to be great as I have given 2 presents to my darling Kimmy while in return I get a present from her as well. We did exchange gifts but I did have a special present for her and it's a bouquet of flowers that I think is a must to show and celebrate our loves. I've bought Kimmy a Doraemon toys and a bouquet of flowers while I receive a shirt from her as well.

Special thank to her for giving me such a nice shirt and I really love it very much. Well, I have new clothes again. Hehe! But the Valentines Dinner was quite dissapointed as in the first place it's my terrible mistake where I did not book the table to dine in and ended up queuing at the restaurant and after 30 minutes wait, we will could not get our places and we gave up since it's already 9.15pm that time. In the end, we have chosen Papparich as our unexpected destination for this year's Valentines Day dinner venue. Although we had a simple meal, but we still have an enjoyable time talking about our Love story and we did enjoyed it as well. Most importantly, I will bring her to other dining restaurant this coming Saturday to have a lovely and nice dinner as a replacement during Valentines Day.

Food Hunt: The Steamboat Ketam Village, Desa ParkCity, Kepong

Dear All,

Welcome back to yet another edition of Food Hunt. Today ME & Kimmy had visited The Steamboat Ketam Village Restaurant located at Desa Park City Kuala Lumpur. We had a great time after watching movie nearby and as for dinner, we have decided to try this. We reached the restaurant at around 7.45pm and the restaurant is crowded no matter inside or outside the restaurant. The seats are very much occupied and I have to wait about 15 minutes before we got seated inside the restaurant. The waitress there are very polite and they follow the seats allocation accordingly.

At around 8.00pm, finally we got our seats and we sat down and were given 2 sets of menu. We browse through the menu and then we've decided what to order. Since we have 2 persons dining in, we've ordered the Double Combo Value Set where the ingredients is for 2 people (RM39.30). The sets consists of lots of fresh seafood ranging from fish balls, prawns, crab meat, tofu, fish and many more. The portion is just nice for 2 persons and you may also call ala-carte items and I've ordered the Golden Mushroom (RM5.30) Please see pictures. For drinks I've ordered Coke (RM2.80) while Kimmy ordered Chinese Tea which is not refillable (RM1.00). For the broth, I've ordered the normal 'ching tong' Soup while Kimmy ordered the Tom Yam Soup. Remember, the broth is ordered individually (individually pot) as it will be served in front of each person who dine in.

I am impressed with the quality of the food over here as it was freshly served. I can taste the freshness of its seafood especially the prawn and fish. Others such as fish balls and tofu is very nice too. The 'ching tong' Soup is very nice where the sweetness taste is just nice. For Kimmy's Tom Yam Soup, it was not so nice in the first place but upon adding the ingredients inside the soup, it started to taste nice and it's pretty spicy as well. The Tom Yam Soup was second best after the Happy City Tom Yam Soup. We did enjoyed the food over here and we ate until burppp.... For the golden mushroom, it's very clean and fresh too. Remember to try the chilli 'sambal' as well as it was nice.

The price is slightly expensive compared to other steamboat outlets. The portion of the steamboat is average and it's just enough for 2 people to eat. The total bill came and it's RM54.20 plus government and service tax. Overall, the food is fresh while the soups are nice too and the portion is acceptable to eat. We will definitely come back again to dine in considering the quality of the food and soup but as a reminder, you must come early to avoid queuing up as this restaurant will be extremely full after 7.00pm (Weekends). For weekdays, you can still find a place to sit with less people. Also this is a HALAL restaurant. Enjoy! MY RATING: 4.5/5 ; KIMMY RATING: 5/5
