World News: Massive earthquake hits Chile, over a few hundred thousands feared dead

CONCEPCION, Chile (Reuters) - One of the world's most powerful earthquakes in a century pounded Chile on Saturday, killing more than 300 people as it toppled buildings and triggered tsunamis that ravaged a port town and threatened Pacific coastlines as far away as Japan. Buildings caught fire, others crumbled and bridges collapsed across swathes of central Chile, but the initial death toll was relatively low from a quake many times stronger than the one that devastated Haiti last month. An apartment block with up to 200 people inside collapsed in Concepcion, the closest major city to the epicentre, and rescue officials said they were unsure how many escaped. Overturned cars lay scattered below a fallen overpass in the capital Santiago and telephone and power lines went down across the narrow country, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage and loss of life.

Chile's government said more than 300 people were killed in the 8.8-magnitude quake, which struck at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT), sending people rushing from their beds and onto the streets in fear, hugging each other and crying. "It came in waves and lasted so long. Three minutes is an eternity. We kept worrying that it was getting stronger, like a terrifying Hollywood movie," said Santiago housewife Dolores Cuevas. It was the fifth-largest earthquake since 1900 and dealt a serious blow to the economy and infrastructure of the world's No. 1 copper producer and one of Latin America's most developed and stable countries. The quake halted operations at two oil refineries and two major copper mines and Chile's government said an estimated half a million homes were severely damaged.

In Concepcion, a city of 670,000 people, some residents whose homes were wrecked pushed their belongings in shopping carts on the streets. Water and electrical services were down and many residents camped outdoors, fearful after a series of big aftershocks. "I've been told I lost all of my furniture, my TV, my refrigerator, but it doesn't matter to me. I'm just happy my family is safe," said Francisco Luna, a 42-year-old air-conditioner repairman. Chilean officials said the number of deaths was unlikely to increase dramatically, and a U.S. Geological Survey researcher attributed the low toll to Chile's solid building standards.

TSUNAMI

A tsunami swept into the port town of Talcahuano, causing serious damage to port facilities and lifting fishing boats out of the water. Television pictures showed shipping containers strewn around and flooded streets in the port, one of the most important in southern Chile. President Michelle Bachelet said a huge wave hit the Juan Fernandez islands, an archipelago where Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was marooned in the 18th century, inspiring the novel Robinson Crusoe. "There was a series of waves that got bigger and bigger, which gave people time to save themselves," pilot Fernando Avaria told TVN television by telephone from the main island. But at least four people were killed and 13 others were missing on the island, a local official said. Fifteen hours after the quake struck Chile, the tsunami reached Hawaii's Big Island, where residents and tourists were evacuated from low-lying coastal areas. The tsunami warning was later lifted for Hawaii, but Japanese officials said a wave up to 3 meters (10 feet) high could hit the country's Pacific coast and warned residents to evacuate coastal areas. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 70 miles (115 km) northeast of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles (35 km). It said an earthquake of magnitude 8 or over can cause "tremendous damage." The Jan. 12 quake that devastated Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince and killed well over 200,000 people was measured as magnitude 7.0.

CAPITAL DAMAGED, MINES SHUT

Chile's capital of Santiago, about 200 miles (320 km) north of the epicentre, was also badly hit. The international airport was closed for at least 24 hours as the quake destroyed passenger walkways and shook glass out of doors and windows. Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, suspended operations at its El Teniente and Andina mines, but reported no major damage and said it expected the mines to be up and running in the "coming hours." Production was halted at the Los Bronces and El Soldado copper mines, owned by Anglo American Plc, but Chile's biggest copper mine, Escondida, was operating normally. Chile produces about 34 percent of world supply of copper, which is used in electronics, cars and refrigerators. In Concepcion, at least 12 buildings caught fire and rescue workers pulled 22 people from the rubble of the 15-storey apartment block that pancaked onto itself. Some residents looted pharmacies and a collapsed grains silo, hauling off bags of wheat, television images showed. At least 269 prisoners took advantage of the quake to escape from a prison about 250 miles (450 km) south of Santiago, police said. Twenty-eight of the inmates were captured and three shot.

"It was like we were being shaken around in a box," said Claudia Rosario, a 27-year-old receptionist in Temuco, 175 miles (280 km) south of Concepcion. She said residents there were without water and electricity. An eight-year-old boy and a man were killed in the northern Argentine city of Salta when a powerful aftershock caused walls to collapse, officials said. In 1960, Chile was hit by a 9.5-magnitude earthquake, one of the biggest ever recorded. It devastated the city of Valdivia, killed 1,655 people and spawned a tsunami that engulfed the Pacific Ocean, taking another 200 lives in Japan, Hawaii and the Philippines. President Barack Obama called Bachelet on Saturday and said the United States stood ready to help Chile. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was due to visit Chile on Tuesday on a Latin America tour. Food & Gathering: Duck King Restaurant, Jaya One Petaling Jaya

Hello folks,

Welcome back to yet another edition of the Chinese New Year 2010 Gathering happening at Duck King in Jaya One, Petaling Jaya. It was an amazing outings overall where we did enjoy the pretty much cozy environment and food over there. Special thanks to our organizer Low Li Yong, who did a splendid job of making this gathering a real success. Besides, she also gave us a surprise whereby after the end of the gathering, we manage to get a chance to win some prizes from her as organizer and guess what! I have won the lucky draw and I was awarded a TIGER bear which later I award to Kimmy as present.

There were 10 people turned out for this gathering and no one FFK this time. Good job guys! Well, the last person who arrived would be myself because I have to wait for Kimmy and to fetch Yen Peng. Well, after I sat down, the food immedietely served upon our request where Li Yong had ordered earlier on. The dishes that she ordered including Yee Sang, Prawns, Chicken Soup, 2 plate of Vegetables, Tauhu Pot, Char Siew (Braised Roasted Pork), Roasted Pork (Siew Yok), Duck and of course Kampung Chicken. Yeah! A total of 10 dishes that we've ordered. I will share with you guys which dish is the best and the worst including those dishes that still can be accepted. The best dishes would be the Duck and the Yee Sang of course of its taste. The duck was very juicy and crispy. It was a totaly recommendation from myself when you eat at this restaurant. The Yee Sang meanwhile is not sweet and you can taste the freshness as well as the rich ingredients which makes the Yee Sang a must try during Chinese New Year. The worst dishes that we've ordered is the Kampung Chicken. It does not contain any flavour at all and the chilli or the garlic that served is not nice and totally out. For other dishes, it's acceptable and I would say it's above average.

Do check out some of the photos of the best dish and some above average dishes that will be posted here (above). I am unable to post all the dishes here because it's too large already. Do check out my Facebook to see all the pictures that I've taken under BSKUPMKTC Chinese New Year Gathering 2010 . When the bill came, it's pretty expensive. But what I can say is the food is pretty good and still you will get some value for money there. 10 dishes costs us about RM596.00++ for 10 persons and the portion of the food is pretty large also. For me, I feel it's expensive and I would not try it more offen and maybe just once in a while. If you care bout the food quality and not the price, then Duck King is the best place for you to go for Chinese fine dining. A good recommendation for this one. MY OVERALL FOOD RATING: 4.5/5. Once again, I would like to thank Li Yong for organizing this event and for the present as well that I've won from her. Special thanks to the attendees for this dinner including Li Yong, Stanley, Kimmy, ME, Yen Sim, Yen Peng, Kevin Kong, Sai Kit, Chloe & Steve Chai. Next year is my turn yeah for organizing it? Well, I will do it because I have won the prize! Haha! Gambateh la! Gong Xi Fa Cai to all of you and wish you best of luck in the year of the Tiger! :)

Lifestyle: Millionaire With Rupiah?

Hey Guys,

Yahoooo! This time around ME & Kimmy had decided since last year December to go travel. We have selected March as our travel month this year and we have decided to go travel to Bali, Indonesia. Of course, before we go travel, we need to check out the currency of differenct countries on what currency they are using.

Today I took RM500 to change for Indonesia Rupiah and I got IDR 1,320,000. I was like WOW! I can feel that I am the millionaire now and how nice if it's an Malaysian Ringgit. Haha! There are several Rupiah notes that you will be given at the money changer counter. What I've got is IDR 100,000, IDR 5000 and IDR 2000. Just an advice from me and my friends who told me this fact. Before you go travel, do change the currency at Malaysia first before go travel because some countries like Indonesia is not honest with their exchange and normally they will trick the tourists. Furthermore, you can change more here in Malaysia rather than you change in your vacation country. Enjoy Your Holiday! :)

Lifestyle: Polis Diraja Malaysia Summons

Hi All,

It was an unlucky Monday 22nd February 2010 for me. Futhermore in a sunny morning where I woke up pretty late and I did rush to work. I forgot to bring 2 things so I stepped into my house again twice to take those things. I had a feeling today something might happened to me. Maybe it's just a coinsidence and in the meantime, when I turned on my favourite radio station OneFM, I heard a topic called "What would you do on your first day of work after coming back from Chinese New Year holidays?" I was thinking for myself perhaps, I will be standing by at my client's place in Shah Alam and I would actually turn on my PC to kick start to my work.

But everything turned ugly when I was driving to my client's place in Shah Alam. I was caught on the act by a traffic police for making a turn at the No Entry signboard near Persiaran Kuala Selangor (next to Petronas station). Wow! It was so damn unlucky as well as 4-5 cards, who had the same faith as me. Normally the road is free flow whereby many cars did that but not for me. I was so sad because normally I won't use the road but I don't know why that day I would use it. It's like a trapped that wanting me to continue my bad luck. Perhaps, overall I have to admit that it's my mistake that I turn in a No Entry sign. I had abide the law too but I just wondering why that day there is traffic police there were normally it does not.

I tried to ask the police for help but no avail. The traffic police is very strict and asked me to pay at the summons counter. So, I went to the Petaling Jaya police station to pay for my summons. I taught it would be RM50 or more and in fact the police counter only charge me RM50. For me, I think this is a standard charge and I am willing to pay. The reason I pay so early is to chase my SUEY (bad) luck away and hopefully it will never come again. My advise to all of you is abide the law and if you wanted to make some illegal road turning or whatsoever, please keep an eye on the road especially the traffic police is available or not especially during the festive season. Good Luck on the road! :)

My Comments: I was in 1 Utama today and it seems the shopping mall was very less in crowd. It was pretty quiet today since it's a Sunday. Maybe because many people haven't back from hometown or many people were in midst of preparation of the Hokkien New Year tonight. So, I've decided to watch Little Big Soldier with Kimmy today. We bought the 4.00pm show and the cinema was not full either. This movie was talking about the ancient times about those China's Dynasty as Jackie Chan and Wang Lee Hom acted in this movie. It was a rather pretty dissapointing storyline as it was not entertaining as expected. The jokes meanwhile were too lame and not impress at all. But I still love the acting of Jackie Chan and Wang Lee Hom because they really acted tirelessly on the movie. Overall, I did not find any good point on this movie that impress me but some martial arts was just nice and that did some limelight on this movie. If you would like to watch this movie, you may go to watch it but just to let you know that it was pretty bored and dissapointing as it was not typed of the movie I like. MY RATING: 2.5 / 5 ; KIMMY RATING: 4/5

My Comments: Today is Saturday and I stayed at home to watch this movie via DVD before heading my journey back to Kuala Lumpur. I have chosen to watch this movie to relax myself after enjoying myself last night. This movie is truly a great movie to watch by people of all walks of life for the Chinese community. Besides, not only the Chinese community but other races and watch this movie too to know what is happening on the China's history in the past 1905. It combines love, action and also sad / murder scenes which makes this movie a total blockbuster and a hit among the Chinese community. I was so excited to know what is happening and as I go through the movie, I am so sad and almost in tears because of some scenes which features some brutal murder and how the people sacrifices to the country. It was an awesome movie and thanks to Director Teddy Chen, this movie promises it's audiences the best ever movies ever made for the year 2009 so far. If you have watched it, you will gave the same comments as me I believe and for those who haven't watch it, don't miss a chance and get yourself a DVD discs near you. MY RATING: 5/5

DVD Movie: Aliens In The Attic (2009)

Release Date:13 August 2009
Language: English
Running Time: 1 hour 26 minutes
Director: John Schultz
Cast: Carter Jenkins, Ashley Tisdale, Austin Butler, Ashley Boettcher, Henri & Regan Young, Robert Hoffman, Doris Roberts, Andy Richter.

Synopsis:

ALIENS IN THE ATTIC, co-scripted by one of the writers of Madagascar and the Academy Award-winning Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbits, is an adventure/comedy about kids on a family vacation who must fight off an attack by knee-high alien invaders with world-destroying ambitions—while the youngsters' parents remain clueless about the battle. __________________________________________________________

My Comments: I was watching DVD at home and I found out this movie Aliens In The Attic. It looks impressive to me but when I watched it until the end, it doesn't meet up to my expectations. This movie also could be labelled as a kids or a family movie as well. The focus on this movie is all about the children who will be fighting for the alien who came here for a plan of invasion. But speaking for alien invasion, I could not believe only 4 of the aliens who came here for the invasion and not many. It was definately not a blockbuster movie as it should be more aliens to invade on earth and not just a couple of them. The storyline meanwhile was just fine and a hand of applause for the kids as they had performed well throughout this movie. If you are bored, perhaps you can try watching it but don't carry too much expectation on this movie as this was one of the worst aliens movie that I've watched ever. MY RATING: 3.5 / 5

My Comments: I was watching this DVD at home and found out that this movie is nice and funny though. Although the storyline is pretty simple and there were not much adventure being seen on this movie as well. But still, if you like the combination between jokes and of course adventure, then you might wanna see this movie. It was a fun family movie and if you have the time, why not go and watch it? It was pretty emotional too at times but at a very limited scenes. Will Ferrell's the man to watch on this movie with his jokes and this attitude on this movie. Overall, nice family comedy adventure movie to watch but not at a high expectation. MY RATING: 3.5 / 5

Food Hunt: Foh San Dim Sum (富山茶楼), Ipoh

Good morning folks!

It's time for yet another food hunt and this time we are out there to enjoy the most delicious Dim Sum in the town of Ipoh. I guess everyone would know what is the Dim Sum restaurant as it was very popular among the people who came from all walks of life in Malaysia. Those who come to Ipoh must try out Foh San Dim Sum as it was among the best in Ipoh and in the country. Even as early as 5.00am in the morning, the place was already started to get crowded especially during the weekends or holidays. We arrived in Foh San around 8.30am in the morning and the crowd were already jamming in the restaurant. Luckily for us as we managed to find a place to sit as my parents know a friend who are willing to let us sit on the table. The place is very crowded and unorganize as well because while you are eating, those customer who are waiting to get a seat will stand beside you while waiting for you to finish eating. In my opinion, it was very rude like that as the system is not efficient at all. They should have a waiting list or a number list to control the crowd.

Once we sat down, we immedietely go and look for our Dim Sum. This time around, we have to self service because the food were unable to reach us as the place is too crowded and the trolley were unable to go through to serve the customers. We have taken a lot of Dim Sum such as 'Char Siew Pau', 'Yee Mai', 'Siew Mai', 'Har Kau' and many other Dim Sum (see pictures). Frankly speaking, it had been ages for me since I eat Foh San Dim Sum because normally the place is crowded and I don't like crowded places because it's difficult to find a place. Only today because my relatives would like to try out this Dim Sum place. Overall, the Dim Sum is superbly nice and very recommended to all of you. The Dim Sum is rich in taste and you would love it from the start till the end. A good place to be and if possible, try to go during normal days where you can enjoy longer time consuming your Dim Sum as it was not so crowded compared during holidays. A good Dim Sum place in Ipoh? Think Foh San! :) MY RATING: 5/5

Gathering & Food: Pusing Public Seafood Restaurant, Ipoh (民眾酒家)

Hello folks,

Welcome back again to yet another edition of the gathering & food in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations. Today is the third day of Chinese New Year and I've reunion with my mom's side relatives and we absolutely had a nice time there enjoying our food. We have to be there as early as 5.45pm because we had booked a table at 6.00pm evening. Once we got seated, the waiter immedietely served us with the food package that we've ordered.

The food overall was totally nice and delicious. We ordered about 7 dishes + 1 extra dish. Yee Sang is our first dish followed by Shark Fin Soup, whole pig skin, cod fish, prawn, mushroom & vegetables as well as a plate of fried mee. We are also afraid that it was not enough for us, so we ordered an additional dish which is the 'loh mai' (glutinous) rice. I love the Yee Sang and the whole pig skin as it was very delicious. Among all the dishes, I totally hate the fried mee because it was very smelly with the mee's flavour taste ('kan sui') and I tell you that nobody would finish up that plate and it left a lot before we left. (see pictures). *Note: pictures of yee sang with abalone is only for own add-ons only. Original yee sang does not comes with abalone :)

The price meanwhile is not so expensive. The portion overall dishes is very big and it's value for money. I believe you won't get it in Kuala Lumpur as well. We overestimate the dishes as we taught that it would not be enough for us to consume so we've ordered extra dish but eventually it was totally enough for 13 of us (including some childen too). It was a super large portion and enough for all of ud to consume. The price is RM710.00 (including tax) and the orginal package we took is RM618.00 + the glutinous rice which costs about RM40.00. Overall, it was well worth it because the food is totally nice. Besides the Tuck Kee that I went yesterday, this restaurant Pusing Public Seafood Restaurant in Ipoh Town also serves nice, delicious and quality food with money worth guarantee. A must go restaurant! Totally Recommended! :) MY RATING: 5/5
